About Janelle Monáe

American singer, songwriter, rapper, actress, and producer Janelle Monáe Robinson, known professionally as Janelle Monáe, was born December 1, 1985 in Kansas City, Kansas. The daughter of a janitor mother and truck driver father, Monáe was an accomplished writer and performer from a young age, and dreamed of a life on stage.

Her youth was spent singing at her local baptist church, acting in local productions of musicals such as The Wiz and Cinderella, and writing plays and musicals with Kansas City's Coterie Theater Young Playwrights' Round Table.

Monáe attended F.L. Schlagle High School and upon graduating, she was offered a scholarship to study musical theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. However, she soon found that her course did not allow her the creative freedom she desired, and in 2001 she dropped out and moved to Atlanta, Georgia.

Career

2001-2007: Career Beginnings

Upon moving to Atlanta, she recorded the demo Janelle Monáe: The Audition, which she performed at local colleges, whilst working a day job at Office Depo. At one of these college shows, she met Chuck Lightning and Nate Wonder – two fellow songwriters with whom she struck up a friendship. The trio founded a record label and artist's collective known as the Wondaland Arts Society in 2003.

Two years later, Monáe had a chance encounter with Big Boi, one half of the hip-hop duo OutKast, at an open mic night. Big Boi was impressed with her performance at the event, and invited her to perform as a featured singer on two tracks from the hip-hop group Purple Ribbon All-Stars' album Got Purp? Vol. II (2005): "Time Will Reveal" and "Lettin' Go".

In 2006, Big Boi featured Monáe as a singer on two more songs, "Call the Law" and "In Your Dreams," from OutKast's critically acclaimed Idlewild album, and also recommended her music to his friend Sean Coombs (aka Diddy).

2007-2011: Metropolis and The ArchAndroid

In 2007, Monáe released her debut solo EP, Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase): the first of an intended four-part concept series that would together form her debut album. Upon hearing the record, Coombs signed Monáe to his label, Bad Boy Records, and in August 2008 she retitled the EP Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition) and re-released it with two new additional tracks. Her new label backing led to widespread interest in the EP, which received critical acclaim and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for her single "Many Moons" at the 51st Grammy Awards ceremony.

In 2010, Monáe released her debut studio album,The ArchAndroid. Consisting of the second and third parts to her Metropolis concept series, the album continues the story of her android alter-ego protagonist Cindi Mayweather. The ArchAndroid debuted at number 17 on the Billboard 200 and was named the best album of 2010 by multiple critics.

At the 2010 Rhythm & Soul Music Awards, Monáe received the Vanguard Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and in January 2011, she earned her second Grammy Award nomination at the 53rd Award ceremony for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

In September 2011, she was featured as a guest vocalist on Fun's chart-topping single, "We Are Young", which sold more than ten million units worldwide and earned her three more Grammy Award nominations at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year.

2012-2014: Electric Lady and other projects

In 2012, Monáe featured on the track "Do My Thing" from English R&B singer Estelle's third studio album, All of Me. That June, she premiered two tracks ("Electric Lady" and "Dorothy Dandridge Eyes") from her then-upcoming second studio album at Toronto Jazz Festival.

April 2013 saw the release of "Q.U.E.E.N.", featuring Erykah Badu - Monáe's first single from The Electric Lady. Serving as the fourth and fifth installments of her seven-part Metropolis concept series, The Electric Lady was released to universal acclaim in September 2013, featuring guest appearances by Miguel, Erykah Badu, Solange, Prince and Esperanza Spalding. It debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 and launched the singles "Q.U.E.E.N.", "Dance Apocalyptic", "PrimeTime" and "Electric Lady".

The following April, Monáe performed at the Whitehouse alongside Tessanne Chin, Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Jill Scott, Ariana Grande, and Melissa Etheridge as part of their televized "Women of Soul" event. That month, she was also the was the recipient of the inaugural Harvard College Women's Center Award for Achievement in Arts and Media for her achievements as an artist, advocate and feminist, and was also recognized as the 2014 Woman of the Year by the Harvard College Black Men's Forum at their annual Celebration of Black Women gala.

2015-2017: The Eephus, Moonlight and Hidden Figures

In February 2015, Monáe became one of the few black women to run her own independent record label in conjunction with a major record label when Wondaland Arts Society, rebranded as Wondaland Records, signed a "landmark joint venture partnership" with Epic Records.

The following month, she released the single "Yoga" from a five-song compilation EP called The Eephus, which features tracks from Monáe and fellow Wondaland artists Jidenna, Roman GianArthur, Deep Cotton and St. Beauty. The album was released in August 2015 and debuted at number 22 on the Billboard 200.

"This Is for My Girls", a collaborative track featuring vocals from Monáe, Kelly Clarkson, Zendaya and Missy Elliott to promote First Lady Michelle Obama's third-world educational initiative Let Girls Learn, was released in March 2016.

2016 also saw Monáe make her big-screen acting debut in the critically acclaimed film Moonlight, and later in the year she starred in Oscar and Golden Globe Award-nominated, and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning, film Hidden Figures, alongside Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer.

2017-present: Dirty Computer

Monáe spent 2017 working on her third studio album, the first not to feature the Metropolis storyline, Dirty Computer.

Dirty Computer was released on April 27, 2018, preceded by the singles "Make Me Feel", "Django Jane", and "Pynk". A concept album with an accompanying 46-minute narrative film project, it was included in the top three of nine publications' Best Album of 2018 lists, and received two nominations at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. The album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 and was, once again, critically acclaimed.

In December 2018, Monáe received the Trailblazer of the Year award at the 2018 Billboard Women in Music event.

From 2018 through 2019, she embarked upon the headlining Dirty Computer world tour, and in April 2019, she co-headlined Coachella Festival alongside Childish Gambino, as well as headlining the West Holts stage at Glastonbury Festival in the United Kingdom in June.
