Dan + Shay's sound has been described as pop, country pop, pop, and country. They also use elements of R&B, pop, and country rock. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic described their sound as "specializing in country-pop so smooth it would also sound at home on adult contemporary radio" and that "their inherent sweetness served as a counterpoint to the swaggering bro-country that dominated mainstream country during the mid-2010s." Taste of Country likened them to Rascal Flatts and Love and Theft.

Many musical genres have been mentioned by the pair. Shay Mooney mentioned Rascal Flatts, Dave Matthews Band, Usher, and Kenny Chesney as musical influences. Dan Smyers mentioned Ryan Adams, Tom Petty, Alison Krauss, and Kenny Chesney as musical influences.

On the duo's fourth album, Good Things, Billboard listed musical influences from The Beach Boys, Electric Light Orchestra, Alan Jackson, and Brooks & Dunn.

Dan Smyers stated in an interview: "We write country songs — the topline, the lyrics of these songs...We grew up listening to all kinds of music, not just country but pop, rock, R&B, hip-hop, everything… and you hear that in the music."

The two got together for the first time in December 2012 at a party at Dan's house in Nashville, Tennessee. They would go on to play together that very day, and the next day they began writing.[5] The first song they ever created together was shelved for Rascal Flatts. The pair signed with Warner/Chappell Music after receiving many publishing bids in less than two months.

First single "19 You + Me" was released to country radio on October 14, 2013. Dan + Shay and Danny Orton wrote the song.
